This is the New England fall cheat sheet, part three of my New England Girl Cheat Sheet series. Parts one and two were the summer edition.

New England fall is short. Violently short. One tree goes gold overnight and it’s on the ground by the weekend.

That’s not sad. That’s the point. A short season makes you show up for it.

So here are four rules, and every one works anywhere. Phoenix. Miami. A condo in Rhode Island built in the late 80s. You don’t have to live in New England to feel that New England magic.

Rule One: Stop and Notice

You wake up and one tree went completely gold overnight. Fall gives you about a day with it. So you look. Right then. On purpose.

Short seasons make you pay attention. It’s why New England fall feels different, and why you remember October and forget August.

Bring it inside: give your eye somewhere to land. One lamp glowing by 4pm. One branch in a vase. A candle that smells like the walk you just took.

Rule Two: Follow the Calendar

It’s going to be seventy five and sunny at least once this season and try to talk you out of fall. Let it be fall anyway. The calendar gets the vote. Not the weather app.

How to feel like fall when it’s hot out

Make the soup with the AC on.
Light a fall candle at dinner.
Swap one pillow and one throw. That’s it.
Use faux stems and leaves. They don’t care what the thermometer says.
Set the table in fall colors, even in shorts.

That isn’t forcing it. That’s choosing it.

Rule Three: Make the Firsts a Big Deal

Every season has firsts. They happen once and that’s it. Don’t let one land on a random Tuesday and go by. Clear the night. Make it a whole thing.

Fall firsts worth marking (save this)

☐ The first morning you reach for a sweater
☐ The first cup of apple cider
☐ The first night with the windows closed
☐ The first pumpkin patch weekend
☐ The first Halloween movie with nowhere to be
☐ The first candle lit before dinner
☐ The first soup of the season
☐ The first walk where you can hear the leaves

Make each one a tiny ritual. A special mug. The good blanket. Same playlist every year. That isn’t being extra. That’s the season, and the firsts are all it’s actually made of.

Rule Four: Let the House Celebrate

The rest of the year, your house reflects the season. A few stems. A swapped pillow. Quiet. Nice. Fine.

From now until January first, it gets to celebrate. Loud, layered, joyful. Outside you get a day with fall. Inside you get until January.

The stacking method: how to decorate for fall and Halloween at the same time

Base layer: fall. Goes up when fall starts and stays through November. Buy once, keep forever.
Halloween layer. Sits on top in October. Comes down November 1.
Thanksgiving layer. Sits on top of fall in November.
Then December. Everything comes down January 2.

The season is the base. The holiday comes and goes on top. That’s how it looks collected instead of like a costume shop.
